Russia invites India to implement large interstate projects in the sphere of satellite navigation

Within the framework of St. Petersburg Economic Forum the mutual investment possibilities of Russia and India have been discussed, in the process of discussion the President of GLONASS Union Alexander Gurko noted that the two countries have a high potential for creating new forms of interaction in the sphere of satellite navigation technologies application.

Russia has one of two global satellite navigation systems – GLONASS. India has its own developing regional system IRNSS, which contributes largely to the development of its economy: from agriculture to infrastructure construction. GLONASS Union invites its partners from India to join efforts for designing, production and implementation of coordinated decisions in the sphere of navigation.

Alexander Gurko underscored that to reach economies of scale such factors as the country level support, high-priority interstate projects determination and road map design on their implementation are required. "Our countries have huge technological and human resources. Integration of responsibilities and market outlets will allow to create competitive products and provide top positions of our countries on the global market" – he said.

Special attention has also been paid to the proposal of joint project implementation on creation of an Indian urgent response system in an emergency. More than 130 thousand people die and about 500 thousand people are injured in road traffic accidents in India annually, that's why the country needs such a project, which will take into account individual needs of the country. For example, in India a system similar to the Russian ERA-GLONASS can become a solution for the safety problems on passenger transport.

"At the present time India is developing new economic sectors, paying special attention to the high-technology course" – said Chandrajit Banerjee, the Director General of the Confederation of Indian Industry.  "In our country there is a great labor potential for development of satellite navigation, it has been discussed today during a roundtable conference. Today the Indian market is becoming more open and, the country's economy is in the process of modernization, for this reason we are looking for powerful technologies which have proved their efficiency".

The business roundtable discussion "Russia – India: possibilities of mutual investment" took place on June 18 during St.Petersburg Economic Forum. The moderators were Chandrajit Banerjee, the Director General of the Confederation of Indian Industry, and Sergey Cheremin, the minister and head of the department of external-economic and international relations of Moscow Government.
