The first Open Drone Racing in Russia took place in Moscow

On May 12 the first outdoor Drone Racing was held in Expocentre; it was organized by the federal network operator GLONASS Union in cooperation with Yota mobile operator.

Drone Racing, racing of unmanned aerial vehicles, turns from a professional hobby into a new generally acknowledged technological kind of sport.During the last racing held in Moscow, the drone pilots were to overcome a specially made track with the help of head-mounted displays and remote controls at the speed of up to 100 km/h.“We have received applications for participation in the competition from 32 pilots from different cities (Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Dubai and others). After the qualification tours 17 strongest participants were selected to take part in the main competition. GLONASS Union is planning to continue organizing such events in the future, because they contribute to the popularization of unmanned aerial vehicles in different sectors of economy.
We are planning to help the pilots to develop, to provide financial support for improvement of the devices; we also hope that a drone racing league will appear in Russia, which will be able to become a full member of the international racing community,” Alexander Gurko, the organizer of the races, the President of the GLONASS Union comments.

The winner of the Russian races was Vladimir Mesheryakov (the city of Moscow), a bronze medalist of the world competition held in Dubai in March. The second place went to Roman Yudichev (the city of Domodedovo), and the third place went to Ruslan Ibragimov (the city of Makhachkala).
“The competition of such scale was held in Russia for the first time. The races took place on a unique track consisting of 50 elements equipped with LED strips and a system of time recording. It is an important step for further development of drone racing in Russia, which has good prospects on the global stage,” Vladimir Mesheryakov, the winner of Russian competitions, says.

During the award ceremony the prizewinners received a monetary award, commemorative medals and cups and prizes from the general partner Yota mobile operator. The prize fund was 150 thousand rubles.
