GLONASS Union took part in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum

On May 22, GLONASS Union President Alexander Gurko presented a report at the "Pushing the Technology Frontiers in Transport and Logistics" Panel Session at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The discussion was moderated by David Schlesinger, former Chairman of Thomson Reuters China, founder and Managing Director of Tripod Advisors. Session participants discussed rapid technological developments in transportation and logistics, and their impact on business.

In the course of the panel session Mr. Gurko pointed out that, while just twenty years back the end users would consider satellite navigation to be on the verge of science fiction, today such technologies are omnipresent, first and foremost in the transportation sector. According to the Boston Consulting Group's study The Most Innovative Companies 2013, the list of the world's top twenty innovative companies includes nine IT companies and nine automakers.

Application of the new technologies, particularly in telecommunications, information services, navigation, and vehicle manufacturing is changing the overall consumption pattern. Corporations and automakers form technology alliances: in June 2013, Apple Inc. announced CarPlay – a system for integrating a mobile OS with an in-vehicle multimedia system. In January 2014, Google announced the establishment of the Open Automotive Alliance, which will focus on adoption and advancement of the Android OS as a common connected car platform. And in April 2014, Microsoft presented "Windows in the Car" – its version of an intelligent vehicle multimedia ecosystem.

With the advancement of navigation technology, major government projects to implement safety initiatives were set up in a number of countries. In Russia it is the ERA-GLONASS Project, which will reduce the time that it takes for the information about an accident to reach the emergency response services. Within the scope of this project, from 2017 all new vehicles on the territory of the Customs Union member states will be required to be equipped with an ERA-GLONASS terminal.

Such projects stimulate the development of new technologies and the enhancement of road safety; they are a part of intelligent transportation systems, which can improve road conditions in a number of countries: more effectively manage the traffic flows and implement various additional services.
