Huawei and MegaFon are enhancing cooperation for the development and early implementation of 5th generation mobile networks (5G) in Russia

November 19th 2014, Shanghai, China. Huawei, a global leader of ICT solutions, and MegaFon, the leading mobile operator in Russia, have signed a memorandum of understanding. Partners agreed on close cooperation in the framework of the development and implementation of 5th generation mobile networks (5G) in Russia.

The main task for the 5G networks will be expanding the frequencies band and increase a capacity of networks. It is expected that this new technology should solve the common issue of all mobile operators in the world - increasing of the efficiency of mobile network infrastructure. The total volume of Internet traffic had dramatically increased after emergence of high-speed mobile Internet access and proper mobile devices. 5G networks will reduce a ping and a network load. For example, users will feel the speed of a new mobile Internet by viewing web-placed videos from the first second without a waiting of the downloading.

For the first time the specialists of MegaFon will be able to participate in the development of the standard of communication and affect its technological features based at the Russian market and territorial realities due to this MoU. In its turn Huawei with MegaFon's advice will test a pilot 5G equipment in the networks of Russian operator.

Due to this MoU, Russia will be among the first countries which have the latest generation of mobile networks. It is very important that this happens on the eve of the FIFA World Cup 2018" - said MegaFon Consumer Business Executive Director Mikhail Dubin.

Huawei Executive Director and CEO of the Carrier Network BG Mr. Ryan Ding said: «5G standard eliminates barriers in communication between humans and machines. Huawei has reached the significant results in the development of 5G standard, and the FIFA World Cup 2018 is a unique platform to demonstrate our leadership in this area. We are confident that with the MegaFon's support we can turn 5G from a science fiction into reality as a new standard of communication for Russian people and soccer fans from all over the world. It will be possible two years before the estimated date of implementation of 5G standard which experts expect to see only in 2020!"

Currently MegaFon and Huawei already have a successful history of cooperation in the development of next generation networks in the Russian Federation. The world's first commercial network LTE-Advanced with the mobile Internet access speed up to 300 Mbit/s was launched by MegaFon in the beginning of 2014 based on the network infrastructure and subscriber equipment made by Huawei.
