THE PILOT PROJECT OF RUSSIA'S FIRST "SMART ROAD" WILL BE LAUNCHED UNTIL MAY 31

First pilot project "smart road" in Russia will be launched in spring 2020. Meanwhile, new technology will be introduced in the Samara region, but soon, such roads will appear in many Russian regions, the official representative of the GLONASS UNION Yaroslav Fedoseyev told TASS.

"Currently a pilot project “smart road” is under implementation in Samara. In Russia, this will be the first experience when driverless cars can move on roads, relying not only on their technical vision but also on data obtained from infrastructure and other vehicles," he said. – From Yaroslav's words, the project will be launched by May 31, 2020"

GLONASS UNION commented that the “smart road” will broadcast information about traffic, road surface conditions, pedestrian crossings, ambulance on the way, and other data to the vehicles equipped with V2X technology.

Fedoseyev highlighted that this project can become a fundamental basis for the execution of the President's order to organize testing and phased access to the roads of driverless cars.

"We discuss it with many car owners who met autonomous vehicles on the roads. And all are saying that artificial intelligence behaves weakly. The car goes slowly, looks like it’s not seeing the whole situation as humans do. The autonomous vehicles machine vision not sufficient for a fast and safe drive around the city. Once we feed them with data from the infrastructure, the car will know in advance about the situation at the intersection or about the approach of the emergency car, and then testing of driverless cars will reach a new level. As well information security will be included," said Fedoseyev.
