GLONASS Union demonstrates initial results and development plans for cooperation between Russia and China on navigation to prime ministers of the two countries
GLONASS Union organized a joint Russian-Chinese exposition at the Open Innovations Forum in Moscow, featuring integrated electronics, navigation equipment, and navigation information services based on GLONASS and BeiDou satellite navigation systems.
During the official tour of the Exposition, the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev and the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Li Keqiang visited the GLONASS Union display.
GLONASS Union President Alexander Gurko and China Satellite Navigation Office Director Ran Chengqi reported to the heads of the two governments on developing cooperation on satellite navigation between the two countries, its focus areas and initial collaborative results.
GLONASS Union and CSNO are developing cooperation in various areas, including discussion on the prospects of setting up a special fund and a dedicated science and technology parks in Russia and China. The fund will be used to support joint development of civilian technologies on the basis of GLONASS and BeiDou satellite navigation systems, as well as development of navigation products and services for Russian, Chinese, and international markets.
Top-priority project for the fund will be joint development of a competitive GLONASS/BeiDou navigation chipset, based on 40-nm technology; this chipset will be used to create a line of GLONASS/BeiDou products for various civilian applications, first and foremost in transportation. Potential joint development partners – Russian GeoStar Navigation and Chinese Unicore Communications – were represented at the GLONASS Union display stand.
Prime area of cooperation between Russia and China is the harmonization of the two countries' technical standards. Planed pilot projects for various modes of transportation were a part of the exposition: cross-border motor vehicle traffic projects, high-precision aircraft guidance systems for airports, inland waterway vessel traffic management systems, and others.
Mr. Dmitry Medvedev and Mr. Li Keqiang viewed a demonstration of the Passenger Information Awareness System for public transport that uses GLONASS satellite navigation signals, developed by the Russian company SpaceTeam. This is the first comprehensive system for transport in Russia, combining unique real-time geo-referenced passenger information awareness, online video surveillance, and GLONASS navigation technologies.
Leading Russian and Chinese navigation sector companies and organizations were represented at the GLONASS Union display: China Satellite Navigation Office (CSNO), Unicore Communications, GeoStar Navigation, Huabao, Technoserv, ZTE, Huawei, Luxoft , SpaceTeam, MTS, and VimpelCom.
