The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has approved requirements for automotive emergency calls

The Recommendation P.1140 (P.Emergency) "Speech communication requirements for emergency calls originating from vehicles", created using GLONASS Union experience of the standardization in this area, was approved in Geneva. The meeting of Study Group 12 (Standardization Sector of ITU) was attended by GLONASS Union Deputy Head of ERA-GLONASS Project Development Eugene Meilikhov.

"In Russia the requirements for quality of in-vehicle emergency voice communication fixed at the level of national standards. Similar requirements still have not been presented in Europe. However, the voice quality is important for the emergency call. Now the requirements to vehicle emergency equipment are specified in ITU Recommendation, which is the international acceptance of its importance, - said Eugeny Meilikhov. - Russia has actively participated in the preparation of the approved recommendations as the first country which has implemented the accident emergency response system and national regulation in this area as well as playing a leading role in the development of the Rules of the United Nations regarding of automotive emergency call systems." ITU Recommendation is an international standard used in most countries.
